Directed by Terry Gilliam
Based on Chris Marker’s terrifying experimental short film La Jetee, the deliciously weird narrative of this film follows Bruce Willis as he travels back in time from the future to prevent the end of the world from happening. Madeleine Stowe plays the psychiatrist from the past who slowly begins to understand that Willis is not the madman she originally thought he was but really is a time traveller. Brad Pitt received all the attention for his delightful performance as the loony tune Willis meets while incarcerated in an insane asylum. Gilliam’s direction does the great script (by David and Janet Peoples) justice by creating a truly unsettling atmosphere that will sit with you for days. Julie Weiss’ costume design is so curiously perfect: almost unnoticeable in its artsy design and yet contributing so much to the look and feel of every period seen in the film.
Academy Award Nominations: Best Supporting Actor (Pitt), Best Costume Design
